Another type of institution that provides support to energy and other projects internationally is a development finance institution (DFI). Unlike ECAs, support from DFIs is supposed to improve the development of poor countries through, for example, improving access to electricity. The U.S. DFI is the Overseas Private Investment Corporation.
In 2016, more than 1 billion people lacked access to electricity. Friends of the Earth U.S. is pushing for DFI support for energy access that is sustainable and affordable through distributed renewable systems like wind mini-grids and small-scale solar.
