Birds of the Natural Bridge

The following is a list of birds that have been identified on the Natural Bridge Park property. Wes Teets, the former Natural Bridge Naturalist, leads birding and wildlife tours at the Bridge and is responsible for most of the birds on the list.

The varied landscape surrounding the Bridge – the Cedar Creek gorge, open grasslands, nearby agricultural lands, the James River and several different forest types – provide a wide choice of foods and microclimates. The Valley of Virginia is constricted near Natural Bridge and the short distance between the Blue Ridge Mountains to east and the Alleghenies to the west may increase the number of higher elevation birds. An interesting historical note: John James Audubon, the famous ornithologist and painter, once visited the Bridge and claimed to have won a bet on the location of the bridge by hearing Eastern Phoebes as he approached on horseback. He knew that they nested in caves and deep rocky creeks and so guessed that he was near.
